Most people use the Panoramic (Pano) function on their phone to capture a wide landscape, like a mountain range or a beach. But if you think outside the box, you can use it to create mind-bending, abstract, and downright magical photos!
Here are three fun techniques to try, plus exactly how to do them on both iPhone and Android.
Imagine a photo where you are sitting on both sides of a park bench, or high-fiving yourself. You can create a "clone" of yourself using the panorama tool—no Photoshop required!
How it works: You start the panorama shot with your friend in the frame. As you slowly pan away from them, they quickly run around behind your back and jump into the next part of the frame before the camera gets there.
The Golden Rule: The person moving must always run behind the photographer, never across the screen, or they will turn into a blurry ghost!
Instead of moving your phone from left to right, what happens if you tilt it upwards? You get a vertical panorama that makes buildings or trees look like they are bending right over you, just like a wave or a scene from a sci-fi movie.
How it works: Start with your phone pointed straight down at your feet (or the ground). Start the pano, and slowly sweep the camera straight up, past the horizon, and end pointing up at the sky or over your shoulder.
If you want true abstract photography, try deliberately breaking the pano tool.
How it works: Start taking a normal panorama, but instead of moving your phone in a perfectly flat line, gently wave it up and down like a snake, or slightly twist your wrist. This tricks the phone's computer, turning straight lines (like fences, buildings, or trees) into melting, surreal ripples and glitch art.
It even better when they are moving with your panoramic movement!
This video has some really good 'PRO' techniques to take great clone photos and a creative vertical panorama. I suggest skipping into about 1:20 and check it out.
For iPhone Users
Open the Camera app and swipe through the modes at the bottom until you hit PANO.
Change Directions: By default, iPhone shoots from left to right. If you want to shoot right to left instead, just tap the big white arrow on the screen to switch sides.
Vertical Panos: Want to try the "Inception" roll? Hold your iPhone sideways (landscape mode) and sweep it from the ground up to the sky!
Keep the arrow lined up with the yellow line as closely as possible while you move.
For Android Users (Samsung, Google Pixel, etc.)
Open your Camera app, tap More (usually on the far right of the mode selector), and select Panorama or Pano.
Freestyle Shooting: Most Android phones let you move left-to-right or right-to-left automatically without tapping an arrow first. The phone will just detect which way you are panning.
Vertical Panos: On most Android devices, you can keep the phone upright (portrait mode) and simply pan straight up to do a vertical shot—the guiding line will automatically switch directions for you.
Try to keep the preview box centered on the guiding line on your screen to avoid jagged edges.
Top Tip for Both: Move slowly and smoothly. The slower you move, the sharper and more detailed your final, unique image will be!
