There are so many file types we deal with across many software's, it is always good to know what file types we will come across and use. You will find below some the file types we will use during our DESIGN unit.
AI files are the native vector file type for Adobe Illustrator. With an AI file, designers can scale their graphics, drawings, and images infinitely with no impact on resolution.
We use this file format to save our Illustrator work. It generally has a small file size (unless we've placed photo images in the doc)
JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. The JPEG file type is one of the world's most widely used image file formats. Able to compress impressive detail into a shareable file size, JPEGs are most helpful in storing and sharing digital images. They're ideal for social, email, and blog content.
We use this file format to save our work to take it into a program like Photoshop.
PNG is short for Portable Network Graphic, a type of raster image file. It's particularly popular file type with web designers because it can handle graphics with transparent or semi-transparent backgrounds.
We use this file format to save our work with a transparent background to take it into a program like Photoshop.
Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is a web-friendly vector file format. As opposed to pixel-based raster files like JPEGs, vector files store images via mathematical formulas based on points and lines on a grid.
We use this file format to save our work if we are going to use it in something like a 3D modelling program, or use it on a website (because the files are so small webpages load faster). Not for use with photos though.
