There we go! Another book I binge read in a single day. In my defense it was just so enchanting. I was hooked ever since the beginning when they introduced all the characters. You know rich people have so much drama going on that I knew it would be amazing. And it was indeed.
The story follows the Sinclair family, a wealthy and seemingly perfect one. Harris Sinclair had three daughters, who each had a family of their own in some way. Cadence is the main character, her mother is Penny - Harris' second eldest daughter. Ever since she was little, her and her mom and dad used to go to a private island their family owns called Beechwood. There Cadence spent the whole vacation with her two cousins Mirren, Johnny and a guy named Gat who was the nephew of one of the older sisters' partner Ed. She and Gat had developed a relationship, since they had been so close for so long. The four of them liked to call themselves the liars, they spent all their times together on so many adventures and were all really close, that was only for the summer though... The story then truly starts when Cadance is fifteen and that particular summer an accident happens. All Cadence remembers is hitting her head in the water. Everything else goes black after that. She has to go on meds and is forced to repeat a school year. Her mother doesn't let her go to the island the following year, but when seventeen Cadance insists and her mother finally agrees. After arriving at the island Cadance finds a lot of changes. Her grandfather had done a renovation, supposedly because of his late wife's passing. Her cousins are also acting strange and Cadance can't seem to figure out why that is. They completely ignore her when she asks questions about summer fifteen. Slowly but surely, Cadance starts to remember. One event at a time. It was after her grandmother Tipper had passed and all her daughters had started fighting about their inheritance. Gat also told Cadance that her grandfather was not allowing his daughter to marry her partner Ed, purely because he was of Indian descent, that's why he was also against her and Gat's relationship. At the end, Cadance finally remembers everything. It was suggested between the four of them to light the whole island on fire in a pursuit to bring their family together, but something had gone wrong, something had gone very, very wrong...
Star rating: I happily award this book the full five stars. It was one of the few books that truly made me hold my breath until the last page. And yes, I did cry. And yes, after finishing it I had to sit down and stare at my wall for a while, but it was so worth it.
"Someone once wrote that a novel should deliver a series of small astonishments. I get the same thing spending an hour with you."
