Toys "R" Us was founded by Charles Lazarus. Lazarus owned a children's furniture store, Children's Bargaintown, and began selling toys in his store. Lazarus eventually shifted his focus to the toy business. The first store dedicated entirely to toys was opened in 1957 and was called Toys "R" Us. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2017 and closed all of its stores by 2018. In 2019, the company emerged from bankruptcy and rebranded itself TRU Kids. Two locations were opened in the United States. Both locations were closed in 2021. In 2022, new locations were opened in 9 states within Macy's stores.
