Description: Remove existing shingle roof and ridge tiles and install standing seam metal roofing at a Contributing rated, one-story, single-family residential building.
Staff Recommendations:
437 Bermuda Street is a ca. 1885 frame double shotgun residence with typical Victorian-era detailing including scrolled brackets and sun-burst motif at the front facing gable. The building is surmounted by a gabled roof with English-V style ridge tiles and two (2) original chimneys.
Currently, the building has an architectural shingle roof. The property owner is petitioning to allow for the removal of the existing shingle roof, including the ridge tiles, and to install standing seam metal. Per the HDLC Guidelines standing seam metal roofs are only approvable when and if they are appropriate for the building type and style. In this instance, the existing English-V ridge tiles add to the character of the existing roof, and the shingles mimic slate that would have been present when the building was constructed. In addition, the double shotgun is visible from Bermuda and Alix streets, and the immediate context does not include buildings with metal roofing. In keeping with previous determinations as well as the type of building, Staff recommends denial of the installation of standing seam metal roofing.
Recommendation: Denial
