7th Grade
Hi, my name is Kate. I am a 7th grade student at New Life Academy. I love to work with animals and to help others. Doing this project gave me an opportunity to do both. Working with Emerson has been a lot of fun and doing this together has let us bond over what we are passionate about.
Hi, my name is Emerson. I am in 7th grade at New Life Academy. My passion as long as I can remember has been animals. I love to work with them and I love owning them. I really wanted to do this project because I wanted to see how Bella would help with peoples anxiety. Kate was a great partner in this project and is amazing to work with.
7th Grade
Bella is Emerson's 3rd bunny and the bunny Kate and Emerson experimented with. Bella is a two year old female Netherland dwarf bunny. Bella was calm for both the students who worked with her. Bella did very well in a school environment and didn't bite or cause any problems. We think that Bella was a great animal to have to accompany us at school. Bella made it very easy to have her in class.
Sally was Emerson's first dog that was "hers". Sally sadly got very sick and passes away July 3, 2019. Sally always acted as though she was a puppy. Sally brought a-lot of joy and peace to Emerson whenever she was anxious.
Emerson's first bunny was named Oreo, he was the cutest and fluffiest thing. Oreo was a male Netherland dwarf bunny. She was devastated when he passed away suddenly. But Oreo was just one of many of her animals that has helped her through anxiety.
Willow is a new member of Emerson's family. Willow is a very cute poodle puppy and she is about 10-11 months old. Willow loves to snuggle and play. She also loves to go on long walks with her friends Marley or Chase. Willow will hopefully be a future ESA(emotional support animal) dog.
When Emerson brought Bella to school, she would always get there early in order to let other people see her. It also gave her time to check-in with her teachers and Kate.
Because Bella was so "Popular" during Flex, Emerson and Kate would go around to the classes saying hi to the teachers and letting them pet or hold Bella if they wanted to.
Later in this project we had to make the decision to not let other students hold Bella. We had to make this decision in order to help Bella not get over touched or to get stressed from being passed around.
The red tub that is in the picture on the right is a make-shift litter box. This idea solved the problem of bringing a cage to school. Having a "Litter box" in the bag allowed us to bring Bella to classes without needing to take her back to a cage to do her business.
Something Emerson and Kate had wanted to do but now can't was testing with stuffed animals. They wanted to test if having an actual animal was what was helping with the stress or if having something to hold and pet (like a stuffed animal) would have the same affect.

"With anxiety, a small feeling can escalate into something huge very quickly. The tiniest thing might not be that big of a deal to some, but anxiety turns it into the apocalypse. It becomes all you can focus on."
BY LAWRENCE ROBINSON AND JEANNE SEGAL
"If you don't have the time, money, or stamina to own a pet full-time, there are still ways you can experience the health benefits of being around animals. Even short periods spent with a dog or cat can benefit both you and the animal."
