Hurricane Resistant House

Hello! I am 13 and I am in 7th grade. I play volleyball, and this last year I played basketball. I also love theater and acting. When I am older I´m interested in becoming an author, actress, or counselor. 15% IP has really challenged me in science and has helped me gain real-life problem solving skills.
Hi, I am in 7th grade and I am 13 years old. I do figure skating and volleyball. When I am older I would love to either be in the medical field or do acting. I love to sing, dance, and act as well. I think 15% IP is a great way for students to help solve worldly problems and to express their renovating ideas through this.
Hi, we are in 7th grade, and this year our 15% IP project is on a hurricane resistant house. We wanted to research and help prove that those houses can be made for those who have experienced a hurricane. We researched and found out that the houses are best made if they are a made of a monolithic dome (more about that in power point). So we decided to make a small replica of one. The picture of our prototype is on the power point, and we tested it in different weather conditions. The results came back great and it stayed put and wasn't destroyed. The picture to left is the picture we went off of to make our prototype, and what we thought was a great design.
Q: What are some of your other ideas and/or solutions to your problem?
A: We wanted to research how to make the house, but if we kept on with this project, we would probably research more about how they built it rather than just discovering what they use and what the house looks like. If we were to continue this next year, we could find ways to make the houses cheaper and easier to build.
Q: Where did you get the idea for your project?
A: We were inspired by another student´s past project, but we used it to only focused on hurricane resistant houses. Also, a huge hurricane hit southern U.S.A not too long ago when we were trying to decide what to do and we knew people were having a hard time with losing families and houses! So we wanted to try and help make a solution to that.
Q: In what ways may your idea apply to the real world? Who can benefit and why?
A: There are many hurricanes that happen in this world, and if more companies can gain the materials, and even make some cheaper, hurricanes wouldn't be a total wipe out for countries who experience them frequently.
Q: What problems arose during your investigation? How did you overcome them?
A: Hurricane resistant houses aren't quite popular and known yet, so as we were researching we couldn't find many resources to help us. We had a lot of pictures of them which helped and we found a list of resources other people have used.
Q: What do you feel is creative or special about your project?
A: Not many people have researched about hurricane resistant houses. The student that inspired us has a little bit, but unlike hers, that´s what our project was all about. I also feel like most people think this kind of research is too hard, and even though we couldn't actually make a house, we made a lot of progress in our understanding and research of it.
