Students are given 15% work time in science classes to research their topics and evaluate data. They also have the option of joining one or more STEAM clubs and collaborate as a team or work independently on a desired project. The Robotics, Ecology, Independent Research, Medical Club and 3D Art and Design workshops are mentored by one or more NLA faculty who have the passion and expertise in these subjects. Students initiate and lead projects through scientific inquiry or engineering design processes.
15% IP projects are evaluated in Science classes based on independent initiative, implementation, quality and effort, collaboration and teamwork at the end of each semester. Many students choose to investigate topics that are humanitarian, mission/service driven, psychological or related to environmental sustainability and responsible stewardship of natural resources. Most are reflective of the Christian worldview education threaded into all aspects of students’ life. Many of the 15% IP projects are featured at the annual NLA STEAM Fair, where students have the opportunity to interact with professional judges and receive awards. This program ultimately equips students with skills needed to use God-given gifts and resources and prepare for their future endeavors and careers.
The jobs of tomorrow require creativity, innovation, independent initiative, and humanitarian effort. The United States Department of Commerce projects a 17% increase in STEM jobs from 2008-2018, compared to 9.8% growth in non-STEM occupations.
