Sam Cave— Dreams of Flight

         Dreams of Flight explores the entire range of the double bass, both through the fingerboard and the overtones of the open strings. From subterranean rumblings to soaring phrases, this piece paints the double bass as an Icarus-like character whose attempts at flight are fragile and, despite great effort and virtuosic skill, are only truly achievable in dreams. Dreams of Flight was commissioned by Caroline Emery for Will Duerden. It was premiered by him on March 1st 2021 at the Menuhin Hall as part of a recorded performance for a Covid-19 livestream at Brunel University.
