The Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretariat should not sit on Working Groups to minimize conflict of interest. If needed, an independent proxy should attend working group meetings on behalf of their agency.
The long-term goal of the Science and Monitoring Working Group is to align the nation’s indicators and data collection processes into one, ideally captured in a single location or database, so that when Palau must produce an SDG Report or SOE report, the appropriate data can be queried and accessed. Additionally, when any Official, donor, or member of the public asks a question (How are our fisheries? Has there been an increase in permits?), the system would allow agencies to rapidly access data and answer those questions accurately. This would allow the Science and Monitoring Group to produce the SOE every two years and SDG Reports as required, as well as be better able to report to conventions.
