Period 1 -
Design:
Introduction to unit, what is Westpoint, what is a Google site. Opportunity to investigate Google Site and Westpoint programme, ask questions and discuss with their peers the
unit ahead
Period 1 -
Physics:
Intro to destructive forces in civil structures + Mini design challenge? Introduce the project, get students excited with a simple tower building exercise (straws & tape) individual, socially distanced?
Period 2 -
Design:
Intro to aesthetics, and links with MYP Design Cycle, Crit A - D links with the IDU
Period 2 - Physics:
Bridge design types & Intro to using engineering software. Explore how load is distributed through different bridge types, learn how to use the engineering software.
Period 3 -
Design:
Start Google Site design set up/formatting following Client interview, why do they need a bridge?
Period 3 - Physics:
Ideation & initial bridge iteration. Students spend this lesson tinkering with the software and developing an initial prototype.
Period 4 -
Design:
Continue with inputting data into Google site collected from tests carried out in Science.
Period 4 - Physics:
Feedback on initial design & material science (how to optimise materials for cost & structural integrity). Students share their initial prototypes, we explore what the software can tell us about load bearing, materials and cost
Period 5 -
Design:
Continue with inputting data into Google site collected from tests carried out in Science.
Period 5 - Physics:
Bridge iteration 2.0. Students refine the initial design with the aim of lowering cost, adding strength and improving aesthetics.
Period 6 -
Design:
Presentation of Google site to peers and improvements.
Period 6 - Physics:
Presentation of model, and engineering contest? Spreadsheet for data entry of load bearing capacity, cost and aesthetic scores. Completion of Google site.
