Justification statement/reflection
Throughout both placements I have became more confident managing the behaviour in a classroom. From observing other teachers, my own experience and doing independent research, I have developed many different strategies for managing behaviour effectively. One thing I learnt from teaching standard 7 is that its incredibly important to develop a good relationship with children and use approaches which are appropriate to their needs when dealing with behaviour. Both my placements were very contrasting in terms of behaviour. Placement 1 was a school which I hardly dealt with any behaviour issue whereas, in placement 2, I dealt with lots of behaviour issues especially from one child with specific needs. This contrast of experience helped me to realise that every school is different and behaviour strategies will equally be different depending on the school you are in. Most importantly, from this experience, I learnt that to manage a class effectively, it is important to use approaches which are appropriate to that pupils’ needs. During my second placement, one child had severe behaviour issues and at first, it was often quite difficult to teach whilst he was acting out in the classroom and it was difficult for learning to take place.
However, I decided to research some behaviour strategies which I could use to inspire and motivate the child to learn. Applying this research to my learning, I decided to offer this child rewards for behaviour correctly and completing his work, for example, extra playtime. This was an effective strategy that had a positive impact on the child’s learning and behaviour as it encouraged him to acquire skills and develop appropriate behaviour. It was proven successful as the child started to complete his work without any issues. In the future, I will continue to research different behaviour management strategies in the classroom, especially looking at the behaviour for learning examples on learning edge. However, I feel its most important to develop a relationship with each child in the class first to understand their specific needs since every child is different.
