Justification statement/reflection
Throughout both placements I have portrayed teaching standard 6 and have learnt a lot from this standard. One thing I learnt through observing other teachers was the importance of giving pupils regular feedback orally and through marking. It is also important to encourage pupils to respond to their feedback. Applying this learning, I made sure to give class feedback to pupils orally and recorded this feedback on a whole class feedback sheet. An example of this was when I marked my Year 2 classes letters and before the next letter writing lesson, I gave them oral feedback. I told the children things which they needed to improve, for example, always remembering their capital letters and full stops and I also told to children some things they done well, for example, most children used good adjectives. Giving oral feedback also gave me the opportunity to address any misconceptions the children had, for example, some children needed to explain in their opening sentence what they are writing about. Giving this feedback to the children has a positive impact on the children’s learning as it allowed them to reflect upon their learning and therefore gave them an opportunity to improve.
In the future, I will continue to give both positive and constructive feedback to children but I will also encourage pupils to assess their own work independently or with their peers as it gives them responsibility to act upon their own learning. I also realise the importance of using what I have found out from informal and formal marking to shape subsequent lessons.
