Promote good progress and outcomes by pupils

Justification statement/reflection
Throughout both placements I have demonstrated teaching standard 2 as I aim to promote good pupil progress in every lesson. I learned that it is important to understand how children learn and how my teaching impacts on their learning. Therefore, I done some research when studying for my literature review assignments and read about Carol Dweck’s “Growth mindset” and Finlayson’s “Addressing maths anxiety in the classroom”. I discovered that a growth mindset is one which encourages resilience which is essential for great accomplishment.
I applied this learning to one of my maths lessons as I encouraged perseverance and resilience as a class goal. During this maths lesson on “finding the difference” all children were having difficulty understanding how to find the difference between two numbers on a number line. However, I decided to try a different teaching strategy since I wanted all children to achieve the skill and progress by the end of the lesson. Therefore, I changed my teaching method to subtracting on a number line, so the children had to subtract the lowest number from the highest number to find the difference. As a result, this method was much more sufficient in developing the children’s understanding. From changing my teaching method and encouraging resilience, all children achieved the skill by the end of the lesson so therefore a growth mindset had a positive aspect on the children’s learning as they didn’t quit trying the first time round. In the future, I will continue to encourage a growth mindset as a way of promoting good pupil progress but also to encourage children to become industreous in their approach to work.
This Learning and Teaching Evaluation shows that I always aim to progress children's learning throughout my lessons. My mentor commented on me expanding the children's knowledge stating how I ‘Extended answers, why?"
Also, I successfully build on pupils prior knowledge as my mentor comments on how I made a "Huge effort to link to previous learning, classroom displays and classroom routines"
This Literature Review assignment is evidence that I know and understand how pupils learn and how this impacts on teaching. This research was about maths anxiety and how to aim to develop a growth mindset throughout teaching rather than a fixed mindset with no room for improvement.

This research helped me to encourage pupils to take a responsible and conscientious attitude towards their own work and study by having a fixed mindset.
