Meet Our Leaders
Kimia Hashemi graduated from the University of California, Irvine in June 2024 with a B.S. degree in biochemistry and molecular biology. She aspires to be a physician and will be applying to medical school next year. Outside of Mission Hospital, her extracurricular experiences include wet lab and clinical research, as well as volunteering with Team KiPOW to educate elementary school students about healthy habits.
She has been a member of the COPE Health Scholars program since September 2021 and has rotated through a variety of departments. While every department is unique, her favorite departments have been the Emergency Department and the Acute Rehabilitation Unit. She currently serves as an administrative coordinator but has had previous leadership experience serving as department coordinator in OB/Transport.
Some of her hobbies include baking and playing the piano. She also likes collecting stationery and trying different coffee shops.

Assistant Director of Projects
Wayne Mai (all pronouns) is a UCSD graduate with a B.S. degree in Human Biology. They are studying to be a pediatrician, advocating for LGBTQI+ inclusivity in healthcare and climate action.
Wayne has been a Health Scholar since the 2022B rotation. Since then, they have shifted in 3 East (Ortho-Spine Trauma), OB and Transport, Labor & Delivery, the Emergency Department, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, Acute Rehabilitation Unit, Progressive Care Stroke Unit, and Telemetry-Sepsis. They've been a leader since October 2022 and currently manage the department as Assistant Director of Projects. Their goal with projects is to create a memorable, educational experience while providing unique ways to help out at the hospital.
In their free time, Wayne enjoys drawing, knitting, and crocheting, and is almost always talking about Transformers. They also have a red-eared slider turtle named Terry.

Department Coordinator, Laguna Beach Med/Surg
Ian Olliffe is the Department Coordinator for the Medical/Surgical department in Laguna Beach, and Interpreter Services in Mission Viejo. He grew up in Santa Rosa, CA, but eventually moved to Southern California to study at and graduate from UC Irvine in 2024. Outside of COPE, he works as a medical scribe and at a medical journal in the hopes of going to medical school. In my free time, he loves going on picnics, to baseball games, volunteering at health fairs, and is always getting ready to go to my next concert (COPEchella!).
Since joining this program in Summer 2023, Ian is grateful to have had the chance to grow professionally, both as someone working in healthcare but also as a professional in general.
