We started our 1st day of 5th grade with a Web Icebreaker to show how we're all connected.
As a Capturing Kids Hearts Campus, we start our year with a list of class expectations. Our class choose:
Respect Positive
Helpful Forgiving
Golden Rule Listening
Honesty Grateful
Kindess Don't Give Up
After reading Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson we discussed how our actions can have a ripple effect on those around us.
Students wrote down examples of different types of figurative language. After sharing them with partners we posted them on the cabinets for everyone to stop and read.
After doing book talks, the students chose the novel they wanted to read for our Fall Novel Study. Check out our novel study activities on the "Fall Novel Studies" page.
To celebrate Dot Day based on the book by Peter Reynolds "The Dot", we completed The Dot Breakout!
We spent a whole week covering mood and tone in various writings. We examined word choice to help determine the author's purpose. To wrap up our week, students picked a word from the bucket and dressed as that word. The 5th graders then put on a Word Runway Show in front of the whole school. During their 5 seconds of spotlight time they "acted out" their word.
What better way to sell a haunted house than to learn about selling houses from our very own Wichita Falls Realtor, Kelly Thomas!
To kick off our crazy Halloween, each 5th grader chose a book to read to their 1st grade buddy. The 1st graders were so excited to see their buddies in costume and get to listen to a story chosen just for them. The 5th graders put a lot of thought into choosing just the right book for their buddy, too.
Our class was matched up with author Jennifer Lynn Alvarez at the beginning of the year to build a collaboration between authors and their audience. Our students loved getting to ask Mrs. Alvarez all about her books, the writing process, and her family!
After reading how the Macy's Day Parade was started, we took a virtual tour of NYC and learned about Tony Sarge.
We ended the week by designing and creating our own parade balloons and having a Franklin Parade.
Our Thankful Turkeys. Students posted an affirmation each day on a feather to put on someone else's turkey.
Pumpkin Glyphs made lockers look festive and helped us learn a little bit more about each other.
After reading different versions of the Gingerbread Man, we completed a Gingerbread Breakout and then made Gingerbread houses. Such a fun week!
Went on a VR Expedition to see the Christmas Tree in Trafalgar Square
Touring Rockefeller Center after reading the story "Red & Lulu" by Matt Tavares.
Comparing Norway's Tree lighting ceremony to the Rockefeller Tree lighting ceremony.
Using Google Earth to tour Rockfeller Center
The 5th graders conducted the great tree debate this week by reading opposing arguments on real trees versus artificial trees. They watched news clips, read persuasive arguments from both sides, learned about OREO writing, then picked a side! Once they picked their side, they wrote a persuasive essay. All of the Team Real Tree students took turns debating with the Team Artificial Tree students. Turns out Real Tree was the winner!
