We began our return from Winter Break with a Book Study. The students listened to 4 separate book talks and were given the chance to browse each of the choices. Then they filled out a Google Form stating their first and second choices. Most students were given their first choice. Upon finding out their novel and group, the students made their own folders and were given a syllabus stating the assigned reading and assignments for Part 1. Throughout the novel study the students studied vocabulary, character analysis, reviewed several reading skills such as figurative language, plot, and theme. The students also completed novel specific comprehension questions and did weekly book reviews using Flipgrid. One two occasions we had guest speakers who came in and did bookchats with the students about their novels. The students loved having different school leaders come and talk with them about the books they'd been reading.
