this week......

Today the students were so excited to venture out in learning how to play the Recorder.

All students were given thier own personal Recorder. Make sure their name is on it. They are to take care of it, placing it in its proper case after use, and bring it back to class for the next several weeks.

They are learning to play "Hot Cross Buns". They have learned finger placement of the left hand. They have been given sheet music to practice reading the note values. Also on the back is the fingering of all the notes on the recorder. They only have learned the top 3 fingering notes. If they only practice what we learned in class to in order to play the whole song without squeeking--would be the goal.

Hint: The squeeking sounds only happen when the holes are not properly tightly covered when blowing. The blowing should be soft--like saying the word "Two" as they blow.

The LEFT HAND must be at the top of the recorder. (It doessn't matter if they are not left handed--the right hand will be placed at the bottom half of the recorder) so for now the right hand is gently holding the bottom of the recorder. It should be held downward at an angle, not straight out in front.

While students are on Easter Break please have them practice what we have learned in class. Every student was checked for proper LEFT hand placement of all 3 notes. Please check for hand placement as they practice these two weeks. To play the recorder properly, do not allow them to switch hands!

Feel free to check out any utube elementary recorder lesson videos if you would like to help them learn the right hand placement and any other song they might like to learn.
