Interior Design is a visual art form but goes beyond the concepts of aesthetics and personal expression to include function and human factors in designing spaces. This course is an overview of the Interior Design profession, as well as the theories, issues, and topics in Interior Design. Study of aesthetic judgement, styles, materials, color, and lighting will be explored.
When interviewing my client for this design project a couple things stood out to me that would potentially complicate the process. Firstly, the couple has slightly varying tastes and ideas for how they want the space to look. This is, of course, a common obstacle when designing a space for multiple people, but still presents a challenge. The other issue is rearranging the space in a way that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The current floor-plan of the great room is a little odd, and makes furnishing the living room a little difficult. Overall, however, I think that this project presents an interesting challenge that I can learn a lot from and I look forward to gaining some much needed experience!
Final Reflection Prompt: How does this assignment reflect the progression or growth of your learning in this course? What new information did you learn through-out the semester that is reflected in this assignment? Can you use this new information in other areas of your life?
I learned quite a lot throughout the semester about how to actually create a cohesive, harmonious design. I have always enjoyed interior decorating, but this class has helped me to better understand the difference between that and actual interior design, which is much more comprehensive. Through learning how to discern quality furniture and fabrics, to what differing design styles entail, and most importantly, how to design for the client rather than myself, I have gained invaluable knowledge from this class that I can carry with me long after the class is over. The problem solving and creative aspects of interior design are applicable in nearly every facet of life.
