Instructions
You should collect all of your reflections in a professional looking newsletter/journal format. The following template is from a free online program called canvaLinks to an external site.. Canva is a fun document and presentation creator that allows you to create a visually appealing project.
Journal/Reflection Requirements:
Start with an introduction. Include a paragraph or two explaining the purpose of the journal and an outline of what a reader will expect. This should be informative, but also interesting. Stale introductions do not make people want to keep reading. Practice what an engaging introduction might look like.
Include all 5 ePortfolio reflections you have completed during Unit 1 on separate pages following the introduction.ePortfolio Reflection: Communication Competence
ePortfolio Reflection: Perception & Self
ePortfolio Reflection: Verbal & Nonverbal Messages
ePortfolio Reflection: Listening Skills
ePortfolio Reflection: Interpersonal Communication
Include a final summary page that includes 2-3 paragraphs on your biggest takeaways about your communication abilities and what changes you will explore for the future.
When using direct quotations from the textbook, please include proper in-text citations with a page number.
Write a self-reflection about the COMM 1010 course. You should:
from the first ePortfolio reflection assignment.Re-take the PRCA-24 and the SPCC
Go back to your previous scores and answers in the ePortfolio Reflection: Communication Competence so that you can compare.
Then write one-two paragraphs answering the following questions: How have your scores and communication skills changed from the start of class until now?
How will you approach communication differently in the future? How will these experiences help you in other courses at SLCC and beyond?
It was really interesting retaking the communication assessments because I scored lower on the PRCA-24 this time around than I did at the beginning of the semester, even though I actually feel like my communication has improved. At the start of the semester I scored much higher on the meetings section, so even though my numbers went up in the other areas, my lower score in the meetings area resulted in my final score being just a couple points below the start of the semester. For the SPCC, my score went up a considerable amount. At the start of the semester I got a 70% but ended with a 84.6%. I feel like that is a more accurate representation of my growth. I improved in almost every area, but especially with feeling more comfortable giving speeches, and speaking up in smaller group settings.
I have already applied concepts learned through this course in my personal life. Strong communication skills are undeniably beneficial in every facet of life; being an effective communicator helps in your professional pursuits, as well as your personal satisfaction within relationships. I have applied some of the course material to my family relationships by identifying the kind of communication style I grew up with, and seeing how it has evolved now that I am an adult living independently. I am more mindful of the ways I communicate with my mom and how I communicate in group environments, like work meetings. The group project was a good reflection of some of the skills I have been working within my workplace environment. Being able to connect with people who have different perspectives than your own is one of the most beneficial skills I think a person can have.
