The Engaged Learning Celebration was an incredible way to reflect on my time at SLCC and the opportunities I had to become a more fully realized citizen through this program. Hearing from the speakers was my favorite part of the ceremony by far and I was extremely touched by the stories they shared. I was especially struck by our Provost's words when he explained that, "general education is an uniquely American enterprise with the goal to produce well rounded citizens." To be a good citizen it to understand the social, emotional, and ethical connection we have to our communities. That's why those interested in the helping disciplines are naturally drawn to a program like this--because they already understand how serving others works in tandem with self-growth. My greatest takeaway from the event was that the Civically Engaged Scholars Program was just as, if not more, beneficial for the students than the community.
