Week 12

Current Events

Below is an example of a current event lesson I could use in my virtual classroom. It is set up as a google form with a link to an article for students to read. It then asks students to reflect on the article. My hope is for students to see respect between political parties when we do not always see it in the media.

Sample Response:

I thought the article, "The Ginsburg-Scalia Act Was Not a Farce," was very interesting and insightful. Not only did I learn more about who Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Antonin Scalia were, but I also learned about their relationship. RBG was very a very liberal, feminist judge while Scalia was very conservative. However, despite these political differences, they shared an extremely strong friendship. We call this a bipartisan friendship. The author conveys, "...they went to the opera together, they spent New Year's Eve together, they once spent time together atop an elephant." This shows that although you can be on two very different political parties, you can still respect each other as a person and still be friends. In addition, the article states, "This is not to say that Scalia did not write pitiless opinions, at times so searing they could grill their own steak. But Ginsburg chose not to take them personally, and sometimes viewed them appreciatively, of all things." This proves that their bond remains even in political disagreements, even when they offend each other. All of this evidence shows that in the bigger picture, everyone can learn to be respectful and friendly with others, no matter how different their opinions are on the world. We should aim to be "the ultimate purple state," hearing each other's views, either on politics, or just life in general.
