A list of The Phantom of the Opera recordings that are often traded with incorrect or different labels (dates, casts, etc). I would like to keep a record of the ones I've encountered to help other traders.
There are some recordings that do not exist and are traded under different dates/casts, so please be aware!
Feel free to correct me if you can confirm something with more details
I will add the audio mislabel page at a later date. Please check back again
I suggest visiting Almaviva 's site for more detailed information on Australian recordings
Videos that are mislabeled or have uncertain dates/may be listed under different labels
Broadway | April 1988 (VOB + no smalls)
Michael Crawford (The Phantom of the Opera), Sarah Brightman (Christine Daaé), Steve Barton (Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny)
NOTES: (4.01 GB) Starts during the overture and missing a few minor scenes.
February 28, 1988 is a highlights/shorter version of this video
August 8, 1988 is a mislabeled copy of this video and lower quality.
First US National Tour | 1989 (VOB + smalls)
Michael Crawford (The Phantom of the Opera), Dale Kristien (Christine Daaé), Steve Barton (Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny)
NOTES: (2.02 GB) Lots of washout and generation loss, but the best video of Michael Crawford around. According to another site, it is Reece Holland as Raoul in the video, though some footage may be from Steve Barton's three week stint in the production. Version 1 has brighter colors but more generation loss, Version 2 is smaller in file size but has sharper details and lines.
March 1991 video with Normal Large is a mislabelled copy of this.
I believe January 19, 1988 Broadway is a mislabelled copy of this from what I've heard, but I haven't gotten a copy myself to verify
First US National Tour | 1991 (VOB + smalls)
Davis Gaines (The Phantom of the Opera), Dale Kristien (Christine Daaé), Michael Piontek (Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny)
NOTES: (3.97 GB)
Labelled as either 1991 or 1993. Same cast as the August 29, 1993 house-cam videos, however this is an audience recording from the balcony.
Third UK Tour (Restaged) | 2012 (VOB + smalls) NFT
Earl Carpenter (The Phantom of the Opera), Olivia Brereton (alt Christine Daaé), Simon Bailey (Raoul), Angela M Caesar (Carlotta Giudicelli), Andy Hockley (Monsieur Firmin), Simon Green (Monsieur André), Elizabeth Marsh (Madame Giry), Vincent Pirillo (Ubaldo Piangi), Hannah Cadec (Meg Giry)
NOTES: (4.37 GB) Magnificent capture in 16:9 wide-screen of this new lavish 25th Anniversary production with superb casting that gives fantastic performances. One of the best Phantom DVDs I have ever seen.
I'm fairly certain the October 4, 2012 - Matinee video I've seen people list is the same as this video. When I've seen the listings and screenshots other people have posted they've matched this video. I'm not sure if that could possibly be the actual full date as there's no details in the menu screen and I received it from the master with only the year. This is also commonly listed as Limited Trade but it's NFT
These 2 Vienna press reel videos come with a variety of dates (December 1988, 1989, etc). These are in fact two different videos. Please see the notes for details to differentiate them
Vienna | December 1988 (VOB + smalls) - Press Reel
Alexander Goebel (The Phantom of the Opera), Luzia Nistler (Christine Daaé), Alfred Pfeifer (Raoul), Priti Coles (Carlotta Giudicelli), Wolfgang Pampel (Monsieur Firmin), Jack Poppell (Monsieur André), Diana Bennett (Madame Giry), Sergio Lombana (Ubaldo Piangi), Alexandra Young-Schmidt (Meg Giry)
NOTES: (1023.7 MB) Making-of video, includes interviews and proshot clips.
Vienna | 1989 (VOB + smalls) - Press Reel
Alexander Goebel (The Phantom of the Opera), Luzia Nistler (Christine Daaé), Alfred Pfeifer (Raoul), Dietrich Hergt (Monsieur Firmin), Sergio Lombana (Ubaldo Piangi)
NOTES: (1.58 GB) Highlights of two-camera proshot. Some generation loss. Includes 40 minutes of interview and concert footage with various casts and productions. DVD menu says December 1988
DVD menu says December 1988
Australian Tour | 2009 (AVI)
Anthony Warlow (The Phantom of the Opera), Anna O'Byrne (u/s Christine Daaé), Alexander Lewis (Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny)
NOTES: Limited trade, 2:1. Two AVI clips of The Mirror/Title Song and Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again.
Sometimes listed as May 20, 2009.
Warsaw | 2008 (2) (MP4)
Tomasz Steciuk (The Phantom of the Opera), Kaja Mianowana (Christine Daaé), Łukasz Talik (Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny)
NOTES: (1.06 GB) Low quality video of non-replica Polish production; no closeups and shot from the same angle the entire time. Trio-oriented highlights.
Often mistakenly distributed as the July 8, 2011 video from the Wieliczka concert. The first screenshot is 2008, the second is the 2011 concert. Uncertain about the original file format of this video as I've seen it listed differently. I believe the original may be MKV format, but I have MP4. July 8, 2011 is made up of 5 MP4 files and is a concert staging.
First Brazilian Revival | July 28, 2019 - Matinée (VOB + smalls) - Papa Rose 2015
Fred Silveira (u/s The Phantom of the Opera), Lina Mendes (Christine Daaé), Henrique Moretzsohn (u/s Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny), Joyce Martins (Carlotta Giudicelli), Sandro Christopher (Monsieur Firmin), Marcos Lanza (Monsieur André), Taís Víera (Madame Giry), Cleyton Pulzi (Ubaldo Piangi), Fernanda Muniz (Meg Giry)
NOTES: (4.22 GB) Excellent unobstructed video of some understudies and the new Carlotta. Can be a little shaky when too zoomed in due to venue size, but in general it's great quality.
May be mislabeled as just 'July 2019' sometimes
Stockholm Revival | February 2017 (TS)
Peter Jöback (The Phantom of the Opera), Emmi Christensson (Christine Daaé), Anton Zetterholm (Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny)
NOTES: (6.38) Full show, shot vertically from a phone. Good quality, with occasional spotlight washout.
Pretty sure this is the same as the January 31, 2017 video. Not sure which is the correct date.
Videos often labeled with the wrong performers
Broadway | October 8, 1988 (VOB + smalls)
Michael Crawford (The Phantom of the Opera), Dale Kristien (alt Christine Daaé), Steve Barton (Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny), Judy Kaye (Carlotta Giudicelli), Nick Wyman (Monsieur Firmin), Cris Groenendaal (Monsieur André), Leila Martin (Madame Giry)
NOTES: (4.21 GB) Act 1 starts partway through Auctioneer's speech; Act 2 midway through 'Masquerade'. Includes a clip of Michael Crawford's bows for his last show on Broadway, shot from a different angle and possibly taken from another source.
Sometimes labeled with Patti Cohenour as Christine, but this is Dale Kristien
Broadway | January 18, 2014 - Matinée (MPG)
Hugh Panaro (The Phantom of the Opera), Mary Michael Patterson (Christine Daaé), Jeremy Hays (Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny)
NOTES: (12.06 GB) Some obstruction and the camera wanders occasionally.
I have often seen this traded with Laird Mackintosh listed as the Phantom, but Hugh Panaro's voice is always unmistakable to me even if I can't see him. Laird was on for the evening performance and an audio of this exists.
West End | January 2006 (MP4) - strangeangel78
Earl Carpenter (The Phantom of the Opera), Celia Graham (alt Christine Daaé), David Shannon (Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny), Wendy Ferguson (Carlotta Giudicelli), David Lawrence (u/s Monsieur Firmin), Sam Hiller (Monsieur André), Emily Harvey (u/s Madame Giry), Rohan Tickell (Ubaldo Piangi), Heidi Ann O'Brien (Meg Giry),
NOTES: (11.48 GB)
This is the full original version of this 2006 (3) Highlights video: Two AVI clips from a never-released video, originally on YouTube. There is an incomplete version circulating around which only includes one AVI clip.
West End | 2006 (MP4) - strangeangel78
Earl Carpenter (The Phantom of the Opera), Katie Knight-Adams (alt Christine Daaé), David Shannon (Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny), Wendy Ferguson (Carlotta Giudicelli), James Barron (Monsieur Firmin), Richard Sidaway (u/s Monsieur André), Annette Yeo (Madame Giry), Rohan Tickell (Ubaldo Piangi), Heidi Ann O'Brien (Meg Giry)
NOTES: Really good video with excellent audio quality. Some small obstructions, but the clear zooms make up for it. Upgraded to MP4 by the master.
Similar case to the above. This is the full version of this 2006 (2) Highlights video: 'The Mirror', part of the title song, 'Music of the Night', 'Stranger Than You Dreamt It', and most of the 'Final Lair'.
West End | January 2006 (VOB + smalls)
Earl Carpenter (The Phantom of the Opera), Rachel Barrell (Christine Daaé), David Shannon (Raoul), Wendy Ferguson (Carlotta Giudicelli), David Lawrence (u/s Monsieur Firmin), Sam Hiller (Monsieur André), Emily Harvey (u/s Madame Giry), Rohan Tickell (Ubaldo Piangi), Heidi Ann O'Brien (Meg Giry)
NOTES: (7.71 GB)
Two versions of this were distributed before:
Good quality video missing 'Angel of Music' to 'The Mirror' and smalls.
Lesser quality version with smalls
These were the commonly gifted and traded versions of this video before. They are lower quality, slightly pixelated, and have black bars at the top and bottom.
Highest quality version is 7.71 GB. The top screenshot is the original, often noted as the upgraded version. The bottom screenshot is the lower quality version.
Broadway | October 1, 2005 (VOB + smalls)
Hugh Panaro (The Phantom of the Opera), Sandra Joseph (Christine Daaé), Tim Martin Gleason (Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny), Anne Runolfsson (Carlotta Giudicelli), James Romick (u/s Monsieur Firmin), George Lee Andrews (Monsieur André), Marilyn Caskey (Madame Giry), Larry Wayne Morbitt (Ubaldo Piangi), Kara Klein (Meg Giry)
NOTES: (7.93 GB) Hugh's last night performing. Sandra gives a very sweet speech. Hugh Panaro's last performance at the time, includes curtain call and speeches at the end. Beautiful, clear picture with great detail and quality, and the entire cast was on fire.
There is a version of this in circulation that has a part replaced with what seems to be a rip converted to VOB format. It's fuzzy, has black bars on the top and bottom, and does not work with the small files. The original files that have now been recovered should be gifted to anyone who has the rip version. Top screenshot is the original, bottom screenshot is the rip.
Please do not trade this video:
The Phantom of the Opera | Third World Tour (Singapore) - May 23, 2019 - Apr1n4
The master got into legal trouble and their recordings are now NFT Forever. This video should not be listed or put on Encora (you will receive a warning from the site if you attempt this)
