November Newsletter

Hybrid Learning

During November, Midlothian High School and other schools in the county, state, and country had their first-ever trial with hybrid learning. From IB Student Council to our teachers, students, staff, and faculty, we express our appreciation. As a community, whether virtual or in person, we all worked together to make the best out of a tough situation and will continue to do so as we navigate through these challenges. Check out our school’s Learning Hub where you can find resources for virtual learning, mental health, and other student services.

Student Spotlights

This month our amazing Student Spotlights are Marcus Royster, Grayden Holliday, Kate Tabor, and Max Law. Marcus Royster is an awesome friend to his peers and plays in the MHS Symphony Orchestra while balancing his schoolwork, a job, and his time on the Committee for Prospective IB Students. Grayden Holliday also participates in the MHS Symphony Orchestra, as well as the German Program and Club, and MHS’s Climbing Club, and spends his time trail-clearing and blazing, hiking, rock climbing on a competitive team, and playing piano. Kate Tabor takes Irish dance classes and also teaches them, plays basketball in the winter, participates in the school band, and does photography for her family and friends. Max Law is great at starting conversations among his peers that are still getting to know each other and always participates in class activities and discussions. Shoutout to these IB students for their exemplary work and their contributions to the community!

A New York Slice

On Wednesday, November 18th, Dr. Abel and the Midlo Community got their dinner at A New York Slice to fundraise for the IB Program. We had a huge turnout and 20% of the proceeds went towards the IBPC. Thank you to all who came out to support, we are so grateful!

IB Open House

The IB Program hosted two open houses on November 17th, and then several smaller sessions which will continue into December, for prospective students. While a virtual setting poses its challenges, we are so grateful for all of our student volunteers, teachers, administrators, parents, and Mr. Spewak for making it all possible! In these live sessions we discussed the course pathway, the application process, and all of the IB acronyms. To learn more about this event you can check out the Midlo Scoop article!

November Vlog

At the end of the week, you’ll be able to check out the November Vlog on our Youtube Channel: Midlo IBSC! Thank you to everyone who participated! The vlogs showcase what our student body is doing to stay creative, active, and healthy during the pandemic. If you would like to participate in December’s vlog, email your videos to midloibsc@gmail.com by December 28th! Feel free to send us videos of all of your holiday traditions!

Daily Planet Drive

We are hosting a school wide supply drive for The Daily Planet. This Richmond based organization provides free COVID-19 testing, health and behavioral services, and so much more to homeless and others in need. With their resources being stretched thin, and less people donating because of the coronavirus, this organization could use our help! We are inviting all students to drop off travel sized items from the below list on Wednesday the 9th and 16th from 2-4pm. We are teaming up with the Library curbside pick up, and will be located near the student parking lot! We hope to see you there! Check out our info-graphics here or on our Instagram, and spread the word to all of your Midlo friends!

Virtual IB Lounge Discord Server

Over Thanksgiving break a few events were created for students on the Virtual IB Lounge Discord Server. The admin had students create their own characters that represented them and a food they would eat that were made into “The IB Discord Feast” collage. They also hosted the “Single Sentence Showdown” where students were given three question prompts and could only respond with one sentence. The submissions were then voted on by everyone and the winners received a virtual prize. This was a great way for everyone to have some fun and connect with one another!

IBPC AmazonSmile

A message from the IBPC Leadership Team: “Are you gearing up for holiday gift giving? Please consider purchasing holiday gifts and everyday items by using Amazon Smile smile.amazon.com/ch/20-1215211. IBPC receives money back for your purchase and it does not cost you anything extra. You can also search International Baccalaureate Parents Council on smile.amazon.com to find our organization. Pass this info on to your friends and family so that they can help support our program, too!”
