January Newsletter

IBSC hopes you all had a relaxed winter break, as we all know how crazy this year has been. It’s our first month back from winter break and our students were already busy with IB events, and our annual International Festival is just around the corner! Please take notice of the recent schedule change, you can view the new bell schedule here.

Student Spotlights

This month our four amazing students that were nominated for the Student Spotlight Award are Hannah Fischer, 12th grade; Benjamin Ogunde, 11th grade; Tasha Wilson, 10th grade; and Kayla Turnbull, 9th grade. Hannah balances her time at dance and piano rehearsals while staying on top of her grades. Benjamin organized a card collection for Covid-19 patients through Model UN and volunteers at local food banks to stay involved in the community. Tasha is so outgoing and kind to all of her peers, always speaks up in class and is a proud member of Midlo’s Track and Field team. Kayla remains active by running, doing CrossFit, and participating on Poseidon’s swim team. Congratulations to these outstanding students for their hard work.

International Festival

Every year, IBSC partners with administration and IBPC to host International Festival! We are still early in the planning process, and a final decision has not been made whether we will have a virtual event, or an outdoor, socially distanced event. If you have any questions, please contact us.

This year, International Festival will be held at the end of April, but it is now the time to sign up if you are interested in performing or participating in the fashion show! Please fill out the following forms by February 5th: bit.ly/IFPerformances21 bit.ly/IFFashion21

Noodles and Co. Spirit Night

On January 20th, Midlo IB had a spirit night at Noodles and Co. in Westchester and 25% of the proceeds went directly to our program! Thank you to everyone who came out to eat or ordered from home, we greatly appreciate all of the support!

Graduate Panel

Midlo IB held its annual Graduate Panel on January 6th. The 2020 graduates were invited to celebrate their graduation and receive their official IB diplomas. Our principal, Dr. Able, and our IB teacher of the year, Mrs. Hill, were guest speakers. A Q&A session took place where current IB and pre-IB students had the opportunity to ask the graduates about college, applications, their experience in the program. Congratulations to IB’s 2020 graduating seniors, you made it!

Grade Level Events

On January 26th, the sophomore class took advantage of their asynchronous day to host a virtual art class! Grade level representative Bella Wagner taught the class and said, “It was really fun to be able to see everyone and teach them. Even though we weren’t together in person, it felt like we were all together again.” Thank you to all who attended!

Next month, the freshmen representatives will be hosting a virtual game night! It will be held on February 5th at 7:30pm. Be on the lookout for the google meet link. This will be a fun way to have the freshmen get to know each other better in a virtual environment, so we hope you will participate!

Extended Essay

This month IB Seniors submitted their final drafts of their Extended Essay. This 3,000-4,000 word paper was written over the span of a year. IB Senior, Abigail van Eerden, says, “The extended essay taught me how to manage a large research project and helped to develop my time management skills. I really enjoyed being able to research something I was interested in.” We applaud our seniors for all of their dedication and work towards this crucial part of the IB Diploma that is challenging in a normal setting, but made much more difficult during COVID-19 and virtual learning. Also, a big thank you goes to Mr. Spewak, Mrs. Evans, and all the Extended Essay advisers for all of the guidance. We wish the IB Juniors luck as they start this process. The seniors are always here to help!
