December Newsletter

December was definitely a busy month, but it was filled with plenty of events to keep our IB students connected and involved in the community!

Student Spotlights

This month our amazing Student Spotlights are Michelle Kulyk, Sofia Craig, Kathryn Duval, and Isabella Yates. Michelle, an IB senior, is a member of the school’s German Club and Writer’s Guild, and spends her time ice skating. In February, Michelle and her sister are participating in an ice skating event to raise money for the Special Olympics, which you can donate to here. The junior Spotlight, Sofia, takes taekwondo and vocal classes, participated in the school’s fall play, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” and advocates for her classmates. The sophomore Spotlight, Kathryn, is a member of Midlo’s City Lights, and also participated in the school’s fall play as the role of three characters. Isabella, a pre-IB freshman, spends her time cooking and painting and always participates in class!

Daily Planet Drive

Every year, the IB Student Council hosts two philanthropic drives. For our first drive, we chose The Daily Planet, which is a Richmond based organization that provides healthcare, resources, hygiene items, food, and so much more to those in need in the community. Currently, the organization is also providing COVID-19 tests. With their resources being stretched thin, and less people donating, we hosted a school wide drive to collect a variety of items from prepackaged food, travel size hygiene products, clothing, and more. We were set up in the school parking lot the first two Wednesdays of December, and we were so touched by the support shown by our IB and Midlo community. Thank you to everyone who donated, spread the word, and made this possible! Grade Level Events

Senior Game Night

On December 8th the senior representatives planned a game night as their prize for winning the IBPC Membership Contest in October. The seniors had fun playing Jackbox on a Google Meet!

Junior Secret Santa

The juniors hosted a Secret Santa event on the 20th of December!

“This December the junior grade reps planned an IB junior Secret Santa! We wanted to share the holiday spirit in a way that was both fun, but also safe for everyone!”

Sophomore Lunch

On the 16th of December, the sophomores hosted a lunch over google meet to bond with their classmates!

“The sophomore grade reps love getting to see everyone, even if it’s over google meet, and began planning for this lunch in late November! While we didn’t go into the lunch with a lot of expectations for conversation, we loved seeing everyone’s pets and stuffed animal collections! We can’t wait to see everyone again in January!”

Upcoming Events

On Wednesday, January 20th, you can support the IB program at Noodles & Company at Westchester from 4:00 to 8:00pm! You can dine in, pick up curbside, or order delivery, but make sure to mention Midlo IB when paying. We encourage all families to be safe, and follow COVID-19 guidelines.

In Closing

2020 definitely has been a difficult year for many. The end of the year is also a time for reflection. The IB Student Council thanks our student body, amazing teachers, Mr. Spewak, and the rest of the Midlo staff for continuing to work hard in this virtual environment. We wish everyone a happy new year, and hope everyone is ready to make 2021 the best we can!
