9. Level crossing barrier

This is a great project as it brings together many themes that should underpin a good STEM curriculum. It is a context that the children readily understand, safety and precision are important considerations, the design and build of the model requires a reasonable level of skill that will challenge the children. The project makes use of a range of affordable components (LEDs, buzzer, servo) and the train sensor input is something the children can invent for themselves.

This could be an extended project, using resistant materials to build a permanent model or a quick solution built out of cardboard simply to test the principles of level crossing barrier control.

Design brief:

A support for the servo and some form of barrier that can be attached to the servo.

A support for the two red and one amber LEDs and the buzzer.

Two train sensors, one before the barrier (for train approaching) and one after the barrier (for train leaving).

Some form of fencing either side of the barrier.

Make the barrier look as realistic as possible.
