A big reason we create information is so that we can share it. Sharing information has become a balance between expressing a point of view and being as inclusive as possible. Outside forces, such as censorship and something called the “filter bubble” (which you can learn about in the Global Perspectives quest) can sometimes limit our ability to access or express a certain point of view. Practicing inclusiveness in the design and content of our information challenges us to step outside our own experiences so that we can better accommodate the global nature of our audience.
The quests you’ll complete as part of this challenge will help you consider the value of different points of view and make you aware of the importance of inclusiveness. The capstone activity will challenge you to think about the balance between the two.
In the Point of View quest, you learned about how the value of others’ points of view can be hidden from us by the filter bubble or efforts to censor information. The Global Audience quest showed you the importance of getting past assumptions you may be making about your audience in order to widen your reach.
To complete the Share challenge, reflect on ways in which an author could practice the inclusiveness described in the Global Audience quest while also attempting to persuade an audience to a particular point of view on a controversial topic. Is it possible to balance these two goals? If so, how? If not, why not?
