Empowered Learner

To earn this badge you will explore three distinct areas: metacognitive reflection, critical thinker, and learner as teacher. You will have a chance to explore a great deal about yourself, and to think about how you approach learning and life, and how you regulate your own learning.

In the following quests you will consider your resiliency when things go wrong, and learn how to adopt a growth mindset. Reflect on the stumbling blocks on the path to such a mindset, recognizing that it takes time to become good at something you want to do.

You will also learn about your ability to share information with others through a variety of means: transferring media, translating for different audiences, and teaching something you know well. Delve into the realm of self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrected critical thinking that will empower you to take ownership of your future learning experiences.

There may be times as you work toward this badge that you feel uncomfortable. The activities demand a great deal of self-reflection, and the acknowledgement that you are accountable for the paths you take and the decisions you make. But it will also be an opportunity to recognize your strengths and celebrate your personal growth as you continue to learn.

Capstone Assignment:

In the final capstone activity for this badge, you will use self-reflection to inform the creation of a tool or resource (in the form of a video tutorial, web page, podcast, or other resource) that teaches your audience about the unique value of metaliteracy on your path to self-empowerment. Do not simply provide a rehash of what metaliteracy is, but relate it to your journey, and how it might empower others to undertake the activities within this badge.

In preparation for creating this tool, review your submissions for the activities leading to this point, look for common themes, and gauge the changes your mindset and your learning have undergone. Done well, this will be challenging. That is the point.
