The stock battery charger for the Metacycle is able to fully charge the 4 kWh battery in about 5 hours. It accepts both 120 VAC (US) and 240 VAC (EU) and outputs 18 A 84 VDC. It comes with both a NEMA 5/15(US) and Type C / Eurostyle (EU) plug.
The stock charger uses CAN bus to properly charge the 72 V battery, though it doesn't appear to be required. If building an aftermarket battery charger, the connector on the Metacycle is a Chogori.
Connecting the charger can unlock the battery just like the battery activator and allow a Metacycle to start if you don't have the activation dongle.
Public Chargers
Because the stock battery charger allows for 240 V single phase power (EU), one can use public chargers and a J1772 to NEMA 5/15 (or 5/20) adapter to charge the motorcycle during a trip.
Charging Procedure
If charging the battery directly (out of the Metacycle), attach the adaptor cord to the battery.
Plug the cable with the blue end into your Metacycle or the adaptor cord.
Attach the correct plug to the charger (US or EU version plug).
Plug in the charger.
Some people reported that plugging in the charger first sometimes doesn't charge the battery.
When Done Charging
Disconnect the charger from the wall outlet.
Wait for the click from your Metacycle. It should happen fairly soon.
Disconnect the charger from the Metacycle or the battery adapter.
The most common problem with the charger is when it is blinking red-red-green, which means there's a communication error. The charger will still charge the battery. Michael Mueller diagnosed his issue (April 30, 2025) as a wire that wasn't soldered to the connector, so he soldered it and made it work reliably. Michael also made a smaller, faster charger for their Metacycle. To get the charging circuit to work, pin 3 needs 12 V and pin 6 needs to be grounded, which are the same pins the battery activator uses.
Charge Adaptor Cable
Metacycles come with a cable that can connect the charger directly to the battery so one can charge without putting the battery back into the bike, such as when the battery is removed for winter. The left side is a circular Chogori connector. The right is FEFB-10009A-02. Both can be found on the parts listing.
