ART: keia's character design has undergone the most iterations and changes of all the characters in this story so i thought i'd divide the images in their shrine into phases to kind of pace the development of their design. the phases aren't hard and fast rules, but kind of just represent a shift or new era in keia's appearance. it also makes it easier for me to visualize their development and to organize how it all sits in my head.
at this stage keia was nothing but a fun character design. i did some expression practice with them.
this was very much at the cishet stage of character concept development
the comic that never got finished. this scene did not make it into the final story (but who knows, maybe things will change)
early design for a comic idea that never got finished. outfit has stayed more or less the same since then.
first full drawing of all four main characters. was establishing all of their personalities + how they interact with the others
(from left to right: cassius, jasmine, keia, nathaniel)
ashy ahh colours bro
keia and jasmine. this pretty much sums up their relationship
hands; keia (left) + kaz (right). keia likes to collect jewelry from their victims; keeping a piece of that person with them, a reminder that they once existed
keia at 13 years old. they were strongly encouraged to cover up the stripes on their body because they were unusual and viewed as a bad omen because no one else had them
keia at a younger age. the mullet was just a baby at the time :0
lopsided j on the right
strengthening the stripes; figuring out how they act in different positions
right: side profile exploration. this one didn't turn out as intended
left: keia and nathaniel. rare interaction that probably only happened once. they are nOT besties!!1!!11!!!
right: keia with long hair because i said so
keia (left) + j (right). keia was looking more feminine at this stage of drawing them, which pushed me to explore their gender identity more as well
practicing aging keia up/down. this was them at 19, their original current age
age 17. this was probably the last time they had short hair lol
sub urban's "cradles" album cover redraw
this song not only suits keia's character, but the album cover suits their backstory really well as well. keia changed a lot between the ages of 15 and 22, and not just because they became an adult. they try not to associate themself with the person they used to be, and don't want to remember it because it came with a lot of pain. a huge part of the events that they're involved with have to do with fire, and paired with the stroller, i would read it as something to do with destroying an old version of themself, which suits them incredibly well.
slay
one of my favourites
drawover of a photo i found on pinterest. i dearly hope the person was only an actor with justifiable reasons for all that blood. keia however cant say the same </3

it's funny because they're intersex. get it guys its because they're intersex. get it guys. guys do u get it. guys do
at this stage, keia's character (both personality and design) is very stable/strong. i like how i can look at these drawings and immediately know that these are all the same person
ai "art" made with a brief description of keia at the time. made on wombo dream several years ago before ai became... whatever it is now. i thought about removing this image from this page, but i think it's important not to ignore that it is in fact relevant in the art space nowadays, as much as i don't want it to be. ai doesnt seem to be going anywhere and i am doing my best to be okay with that fact. original, human creativity will always be valued, wanted, and important. i think this website itself is proof enough of that
ref sheet before changing their race
current ref sheet
decided to change their race and make them blasian because i realized i didn't see enough of myself in my own art. i make a conscious effort to incorporate diversity into my art and especially into this story because i grew up with a lack of it, but i realized that after all my efforts, i still didn't incorporate my own diversity into it, especially not into the literal main character. i'm still unsure if this is their final look or if i will make their race more ambiguous considering their unknown background, but i know i definitely want to have more representation of myself in my own story
