Kaz is smart and ambitious, kind, funny, loving, and considerate. he cares strongly for people and doesn’t like to see others suffering. He is polite and raised well by his parents, and cares deeply even for those he doesn’t know very well. He wants very much to be able to make a tangible difference in someone’s life/day even if it’s just giving them coffee and making them smile or something.
Kaz has a fantasy form of albinism which is the reason he is so pale and has white hair. him having the fire trait caused this albinism as, simply put, the trait was what his body decided to focus on instead of everything else. as a result, his genes "forgot" to give his hair pigment, and he suffers from random and uncontrollable inconveniences like having bad vision and chronic (but mild) health problems.
Him having feathers scattered all over his body is not a random occurence. They have to do with an alternate form he can take -- one a lot more beast/creature-like than human. Every gifted human has an alternate form in which their ability is stronger and more easily channelled. Those with the fire trait take the form of a phoenix-like creature, hence the feathers.
He has the ability to manipulate fire and heat — fire powers. they are nicknamed the “fire trait”. his family runs an incredibly successful business based around this trait, and Kaz is next in line to inherit the business. he argues a lot with his parents about this, since this is the reason they’ve got so many expectations for him, but he doesn’t even know if that’s what he actually wants to do in the future.
He used to hate himself because he felt like he was a disappointment to his family due to being trans, gay, and not agreeing with his family's traditional standpoints. He is very sociable and open to talking to people, but he often worries if they are actually genuine. He is never sure whether people actually like him for who he is. He bottles up his feelings a lot, which causes him a lot of pent-up sadness about himself and his family. In addition, he is talented and well-versed in many sports and activities (especially music), but doesn’t feel as if he has much of a “purpose”.
Kaz's family is Latvian-inspired. He speaks Latvian fluently and is very connected to his heritage, partially because his older relatives never let anyone forget it. He has a twin sister, a younger sister, and a younger brother.
He’s somewhat embarrassed about the fact that he writes his own music and is reluctant to have people he knows in real life listen to his songs. not because they are bad in any way, they’re just personal and about his own experiences. he sings, plays both acoustic and electric guitar, and plays the piano, cello, violin, and bass. he’s had experience playing most well-known instruments but those are his favourites.
He wants desperately to make his family proud and feels as if he isn't achieveing that very well with who he is as a person, so he turns to other things to make them proud, such as sports, talents, hobbies, academics, achievements etc. He is an extremely talented and accomplished person, but still never feels as if he is enough. The boarding school most of the story takes place in is one of Kaz's latest attempts to please the family.

rich people am i right
age 14 (she/they) - kaz came out to his parents as genderqueer. they weren't incredibly accepting (more on this later) but supported him nonetheless
he cut off a significant portion of his hair shortly after, but he wasn't allowed to cut it in any masculine styles yet as to avoid raising the suspicions of the rest of his family. they were apalled enough that he cut his hair in the first place (had been growing it out forever, it was like butt-length)
age ~16 (they/them) - got a binder/started binding. parents weren't enthused with the fact that this did not just seem like a phase but didn't oppose it
shortly before age 17 (they/he) - started testosterone. parents were not happy about this but he did it anyway
age 18 (he/they) - got gender-affirming surgeries. didn't ask parents' permission as he was now an adult and knew they wouldn't want it for him anyway. obviously this was hard to keep quiet so he came out to the rest of his family/extended family shortly after the surgery and then promptly left for boarding school. pretty obviously most of the family members were not happy, so him leaving probably was for the best. still, those will be some interesting talks over winter break...!
kaz is confident about himself UNTIL the subject of his trans-ness comes up. then, he feels inadequate and like he doesn’t know what he’s doing. he avoids this problem by being a perfectionist in everything else. he puts on a cool, friendly, and collected front but deep down is constantly thinking about if others are judging him. he often feels like he’s faking being himself due to the fact that he can’t fully come to terms with his identity as a trans guy. he’s been on testosterone for about a year and has recently gotten surgery, but he feels like he never really did anything to deserve him having these things, and he feels like him being trans is doing other people more harm than good. this is because his family doesn’t really accept his identity and have treated him differently (and somewhat lesser) ever since he came out to them. his transition is/was also just a lot to process while trying to uphold all of his responsibilities and his family’s expectations at the same time.
on the parents: the flores family is generally progressive to an extent. they are open to new concepts but always prioritise the family and its well-kept traditions. so naturally, never having had an (openly) transgender family member before threw them off balance, especially the parents, whose duty it is to raise a child who will one day be fit to take over the family
it's an honour to be the head of the family and you don't want to put your household to shame, so the parents will do all they can to make sure their child grows up capable of becoming head of the family. this generally includes planning ahead in terms of dating and/or marriage
not arranged marriages per se, but the parents definitely have an idea of how they want things to go. as times move forward however and expectations surrounding romantic relationships change, so do the flores family's expectations. so for kaz's parents, their priority was to make sure that kaz ends up with a "husband so she can pass her trait down to the next generation". which is where him being trans (and gay) becomes a problem, because it messes up his sure shot at becoming head of the family and passing down his trait to a child. because he quite literally can't (or won't)
for other, older, and more conservative/traditional family members, they're plain old transphobic/homophobic, using the excuse that "that's not how things are done". his parents try to be as accepting as possible, but the family's expectations combined with the novelty of the situation and their built-in biases show that they aren't as accepting as they make themselves out to be
why not just hand the position of future head to someone else? kaz is the strongest/most well-versed in his ability because he's been raised up until this point ready to assume the role when he's old enough. the family has many debates on this and always comes to a standstill. handing the position to someone else would mean starting from square one, but would it be worth it if the current "heir" might not even be able to fill the role?
