islam_5_welcome

As Salamu Alaikum dear Students and Parents:

Welcome to the Sunday school, Grade 5 Islamic Studies class. My name is Mohsin Rasheed, and I will be teaching Islamic Studies. I will also have with me, my teaching assistant, Zohair Azmi. In this letter I will go through some basic details of class work that I have planned this year. This applies to both fall and spring semesters.

Book

“Learning About Islam” by Yahya Emerick. We are planning to cover most of the book during the course of the whole year. However, I am going to provide class notes to cover additional details and topics that are not part of the book.

Work breakdown

The coursework will comprise of Pop quizzes, Presentations, Classroom discussions and games, Home Assignments and Midterm/Final exams. The following table lists the breakdown of each of these activities:

Homework

While I will make every effort to cover most of the material in the classroom, being it a weekend-only school, some homework is necessary to aid review and repetition.

  • Home assignments will need to be completed on time.
  • Unless otherwise indicated below or told specifically in the classroom, the assignments are due in the next session.
  • Students, who for some reason are not able to attend a session, will need to make sure there are no assignments due for the next session.
  • The assignments will be posted on school’s website within 2 days of the session.
  • Students or parents can also either call the teacher (412.856.0771) or call one of the follow colleagues to check on this.
  • All assignments need to be turned in at their deadlines. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Pop Quiz

Students are expected to be prepared for this quiz during the session.

Classroom participation & Presentations

  • Students are also expected to participate in classroom discussions and show interest in learning the subject.
  • They will also be asked from time to time to prepare for presentations on different topics not directly related to the ones covered in the book.
  • We do play games during the classroom and students do enjoy them. This is one other way to show keen interest in the subject and performance is measured based on their involvements.

Attendance

Students are expected to arrive in the classroom no later than 5 minutes past the scheduled start time.

Parent Involvement

Performance of students directly correlates to the involvement of their parents. Parents are expected to discuss students’ performance with me whenever they feel like. It goes a long way in achieving the goals we all have set out for our students.

It is requested and mandatory that parents provide their email address to the teacher via the students. Most of the communication will be done over email and website.

We look forward for exciting year full of learning and fun.
