Angles in Action: Clarifying User Needs Through Motion and the Unit Circle
How can estimating and describing angles help us design a robotic arm motion that truly meets a user's needs?
Learning Intentions:
Connect angles and periodic motion to real-world tasks, and apply these mathematical concepts to empathetic, user-centered design in engineering contexts.
Today's Concept:
Yesterday, you brainstormed the questions you'd ask your user. Today, we have sample answers from someone who needs your help.
But there's a problem. The user doesn't speak 'robot.' They say things like, 'I need to stir the pot gently, back and forth.' A robot's motor doesn't know what 'gently' means. It doesn't know what 'back and forth' means. Your job today is to be the translator. You have to take their human story and turn it into the mathematical specifications, the angles and cycles, that an engineer can actually use to build a solution.
