Standard 7 - Assessment – The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
Artifact Description: This assessment project was on Chapter 2, "Cognitive Development" of Educational Psychology by Anita Woolfolk for my Educational Psychology class. I used Bloom's taxonomy questions, consisting of eight multiple-choice and two essay questions based upon my class's previous knowledge learned throughout this course.
This project provided a better understanding of different concepts and theories described by Woolfolk, and also it explained how to implement them in various scenarios in the school.
The test construction project created allowed me to understand the importance of assessments to help students meet their goals and perform better in school. While creating this project, I also learned the importance of collecting data to know each student's academic performance and help those students who might need extra support. Therefore, creating a test construction is helpful, easy, and gives reliable information.
However, The primary purpose of developing Assessments, as the one mentioned, is to help teachers modify lesson plans based on student performance. And also to give teachers solid evidence of individual students' performance and their struggles and strengths.
This project assessment connects to the Illinois professional teaching standard 7 because I used appropriate resources to measure student growth and monitor and evaluate their outcomes. Therefore, throughout using these resources, I made correct decisions to adjust teaching practices to meet students' needs.
Connection to the IPTS standard: Performance indicator 7J states "the competent teacher uses assessment results to determine student performance levels, identify learning targets, select appropriate research-based instructional strategies, and implement instruction to enhance learning outcomes". While creating the test project, I was able to determine students' performance when getting the results and comparing each one's performance. The results obtained enabled me to implement instruction and change teaching strategies.
Performance indicator 7K states "the competent teacher appropriately uses a variety of formal and informal assessments to evaluate the understanding, progress, and performance of an individual student and the class as a whole".
This assessment mentioned before can be used as formal or informal because it helps teachers track students' performance and helps students understand and review a specific topic.
Performance indicator 7M states "the competent teacher maintains valuable and accurate records of student work and performance".
The data collected through the report is easy to read and reliable; the charts are well explained and in numerical order. It is easy to access the information collected, and it is also well organized to differentiate each section needed.
Description of what I learned:
Performance indicator 7O states "the competent teacher effectively uses appropriate technologies to conduct assessments, monitor performance, and assess student progress".
I implemented The use of technology while creating this test, and it also was used by the students when answering the questions. For example, I used google forms to review and collect my student's data, and I also used Microsoft World to organize all the information collected.
Artifact Description: Assessing students' performance is a daily job and has to be developed in the best and easy way possible to collect all data and provide better lessons. For this standard, I chose exit slips or exit tickets which help and give positive feedback when assessing students' performance after a lesson has been taught.
Connection to the IPTS standard: This artifact was a perfect demonstration for Standard 7.understands how to make data-driven decisions using assessment results to adjust practices to meet the needs of each student; 7G) Good assessments are part of being a good teacher. As part of it, having options when assessing students will benefit not only students but also teachers.
Description of what I learned: As it is known, having an organized classroom and a good way of assessing students will always give a positive outcome. I learned that there are so many good assessments to evaluate students' achievement, but it is crucial to implement them according to their needs and look for options. The student's achievement and needs always come first.
