Standard 2 - Content Area and Pedagogical Knowledge – The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.
Artifact Description: This assignment was created in my Fine Arts Class. As part of this activity, the teacher created a meaningful learning experience for students to interact and experience and develop skills. Students' participation was amazing, and they enjoyed each aspect of the play.
Connection to the IPTS standard: This artifact was a perfect demonstration for Standard 2. Understands the cognitive processes associated with various kinds of learning (e.g., critical and creative thinking, problem-structuring and problem-solving, invention, memorization, and recall) and ensures attention to these learning processes so that students can master content standards; 2C) students learn their role in the play and memorize their lines.
2H) understands the relationship among language acquisition (first and second), literacy development, and acquisition of academic content and skills.
Description of what I learned: Having students perform in a play is an incredible experience and a fantastic way to teach them literacy. I learned that exposing students to different environments helps them to learn and retain information quickly. Students enjoyed this activity and learned from it in a fun way.
Artifact 2 Description: One content area in special education is life skills. The students went to play bowling and practiced real-life scenarios, such as selecting items off a menu list.
Connection to the IPTS standard: This artifact was a perfect demonstration of Standard 2. Understands the relationship of knowledge within the disciplines to other content areas and life applications; 2D) exposing students to out-of-school activities is crucial and helps them develop social skills. Students demonstrated a great understanding of this activity and enjoyed it.
Description of what I learned: I learned the importance of teaching students social activities that help them develop good social skills. Also, during this activity, students showed high respect for others, followed the rules, and waited patiently when taking their turns to play. So I learned that it is imperative to consider students' needs and look for options to make them more successful at school and in the community.
