About the Orchestra
The Symphony Orchestra is one of our flagship ensembles, having performed a long list of very impressive repertoire that includes symphonies, concertos, and choral-orchestral works alongside the Manchester University Chorus. The chorus is seated on a rotational basis, informed by the MUMS auditions. The orchestra is conducted and rehearsed by the MUMS artistic director, Rob Guy, in collaboration with the student conductors.
Who can play in the Symphony Orchestra?
Anyone is free to audition to be part of the pool of players that are seated for orchestra rotations. We encourage non-music students to get involved wherever possible, and all players must re-audition each year if they wish to be seated in projects. More information on auditions can be found here. You do not require a MUMS membership to audition. Once seated, players may attend two rehearsals free of charge as a taster. After this, you will need to have a MUMS membership to play in the Orchestra.
Rehearsals
Orchestra rehearsals take place on Tuesday evenings (6.15-9pm) and Wednesday afternoons (3.15-6pm). Projects usually last 3 weeks, and there are 4-5 projects each semester. This allows different players to be seated for each project. Each rotation is run by a team of Concert Mangers and the Head Concert Manager.
