About Robert Guy

Born with severe hearing loss, Robert didn’t hear birdsong until after life‑changing operations as a child — a moment that transformed everything. Music became not just a passion but a revelation, and today he channels that early silence into powerful, electrifying performances on stages around the world.

He began his career as a professional freelance violist with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera North and performing alongside the Allegri String Quartet. Since stepping onto the podium, he has built a career defined by bold leadership, relentless energy and a belief in music’s ability to transform lives. He has conducted 73 world premières, shaped the next generation of musicians, and led orchestras and choirs from London’s West End to Hong Kong, Salzburg, Beijing, Austria and Kazakhstan. His international work includes conducting concert broadcasts for Classic FM and the BBC, and in October he made his debut with the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong at City Hall. He has also conducted the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Kosovo Philharmonic and Manchester Camerata.

As Principal Conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, he nurtures the next wave of talent — earning the trust of Sir Simon Rattle himself. His work includes collaborating with Danny Elfman at the Philharmonic Hall, conducting over 150 musicians from the Liverpool Philharmonic ensembles in a new version of Wunderkammer.

As Co‑Founder and Principal Conductor of NEW Sinfonia, he is committed to breaking barriers in North Wales, making classical music accessible to all and redefining what an orchestra can be. NEW Sinfonia’s fearless approach to new music includes a concert broadcast for Classic FM and the acclaimed Gresford: Up From Underground community opera by Jon Guy, which engaged thousands, honoured Welsh heritage in a groundbreaking way and was nominated for an RPS Impact Award.

Alongside his conducting work, he leads one of the largest university music programmes in the UK at the University of Manchester, inspiring hundreds of young musicians to discover their own voices. His work has been featured on BBC Radio, showcased internationally, and recorded for Sony PlayStation.
