Macalester College is a higher education institution that particularly prides itself in its environmental leadership. According to its website, the college states that, “The foundations of sustainability are strong and visible here.” (Macalester College, 2022), and that their Sustainability Office’s mission is, “To be a catalyst, convener, and champion of urban sustainability and environmental justice ideas and actions across and beyond campus.” (Macalester College, 2022).
For Macalester College to truly become a champion of environmental justice however, it must obviously first work to become environmentally sustainable.
Three of the most essential components of sustainable infrastructure are waste diversion, green energy, and sustainable design. Here in these three case studies, we will look into the implications of each infrastructural element both on and off Macalester’s campus as they pertain to environmental justice.
