Named after Catharine Deaver Lealtad (Class of 1915), the first African American graduate of Macalester College and a talented doctor; and Esther Torii Suzuki (Class of 1946), a survivor of the Japanese internment camps during WWII and a six-year member of the Macalester College Alumni Board, the LSC provides resources and support to students working towards social justice.

An interdisciplinary field of study, American Studies, examines how race, power and difference has shaped the United States over the course its relatively nascent existence. The curriculum places an emphasis on the power of social movements and change as we examine and trace these cultural, political, and ecological struggles that have define the American experience.
Drawing upon the sciences, natural sciences, humanities and political science, this interdisciplinary field places the environment at the center of its research inquiry. The curriculum emphasizes a range of qualitative and quantitative methodological approaches to research questions surrounding environmental advocacy, conservation, and justice.
