It has been a few months since the referent videos were taken. I have learned over the years that at some point, to share or preserve videos because they could get destroyed, take an action before they do.
October 2024 marked the 100th birthday of President Jimmy Carter.
This page will be worked on intermittently ,as there are several pieces of information and journeys that are planned to be discussed.
The journeys include, what happened, that led up to making certain to make a presence for President Carter.
There are numerous jouneys, but to draw a line on how far back is appropriate, and leave room for youth and those in the future to do their own studies, one of the journeys will be started with Lt Col. James Thornton, bornaround the turn of the century 1900. According to my records he served in both world was. The prominent history was as an officer in WWI, however, at age 50 or shortly after, he was called up again to serve in WWII. At about that time, his son James Thornton II, served the Army as a teenager, for a few years, whereas there was concurrent service of both father and son. J. Thornton II eventually moved to Washington DC, principally to study. This sentence and the next several were shared in recent weeks from my uncle, now over age 90, in A. McNichols III. I may have been told this before by my father, however, what Uncle McNichols told me was that J. Thornton II, my grandfather, ran the bookstore at Howard University. The years probably around 1948 to 1952. So there is his journey, from a young man that grew up primarily in Harlem, NY, to being a WWII veteran, to marrying his wife a member of the Howard Players, a theater group, that has become historic in some sense. I managed to pull up through study the residential history of Mr and Mrs Thornton, going back from the mid 1940s through the 1950s. My father, born in DC, as it appears in one of the properties Mr and Mrs Thornton lived in, went from there, to intern at SNCC, to deciding upon a mentor that instilled in him the importance of knowing the truth of your history and heritage.
Sometime around 1980, I distinctly remember the day, I was under 10 years old, in the same DC house in NW Washington he grew up in, my father giving me a brief sketch of the family, while there was the concurrent instilling in me to also find the truth out about oneself, pertinent aspect, pedigree.
I was fortunate to have both parents, all 4 grandparents, and some great grandparents still living at the time, enabling me to actually see at least that far back first hand.
Once my father disrupted toddler play in the house, at the time President Carter was serving, and I turned to him and started to say that he had some similarities to the man in the White House. He brushed it off saying it was fairy tale heard while he was a toddler one day sitting at a kitchen table while elder relatives told stories about their ancestry. Conjecturing that was in the early to mid 1950s.
Since about 1980 on, here and there I would study different aspects of the family, history, heritage, culture, and so forth, some of it not an exact account, as there was more studying to do. I traveled to different areas, and essentially ransacked bookshelves of library after library, bookstore after bookstore, amassing information.
It was the obliging to call my great aunt on her 80 or 80 something birthday, about 2006 or 7, where she told me about the Proctors, which led to uncoverings about the Tapscotts... it was the drive out to Mr Colvin's house, might have been about an hour or two drive time each way, around 2007, before he died, where he told me 'your great.. grandparents are 'E. Perciful and E. Carter'. Not so much rummaging through book after book. I might have seen records saying the same online, but did not apply it to my pedigree, as there were no validated anchors.
All said, the paying of respects to Jimmy Carter, was about as minimal as could be conceived in consideration of the larger picture.
Chancery uncovered about 2016, and had the help of a famous librarian (Mrs Jett) to transcribe it, exposed the male line of Carters of nee E. Carter mentioned above. Sir Dale and his wife Lady Diana Skipwith, which appear to be in the ancestry going back, lest I'm mistaken are some prominent Carters. There is more. For now, the tribute is on the road. There are 2 videos which I took at the memoriam event, as well as a couple of booksignings. I'm in process of getting those videos uploaded.
Kith and kin is discussed in the Quran; a brief note to others in the family that might claim that they use that Book as a guide; if kith and kin is not applicable here, then the question asked is, how could it not?
