Greetings. Peace. This website is to serve a few purposes. I do not believe that speaking about oneself is a noble activity, unless it is required to perform an important job. Even still, the amount of discussion about oneself is often best kept at minimum. Albeit, the social environment that exists today, and current designs of the job market, give rise for the recommendation to have a personal website.
Author and subject of this site, my name is, Luqman Abdullah Thornton. My given name/s is/are Luqman Abdullah. My patriline surname, family name, or a term transliterated from Arabic, al ism al ajdad, basically meaning the name of your grandfathers, is Thornton. For practicality, Thornton is the family and last name used by my agnatic grandfathers for at least several generations back.
Perhaps current Latin language body has a word that might closely describe the relation to Thornton, considering over at least the past roughly 5000 years, language has changed, English, Arabic, Imhrac, Irish, Icelandic, Chinese, etc., words may be shorter, and are not said with as many details as long ago, truncations to truncations, and the tongues of men may be smaller as the physical stature of some men may have decreased over time. The Latin word referenced is avitus; avita.. avitum, .. aviti... et al/ etc.. - briefly meaning, of/belonging to grandfather; ancestral, ancient. Thornton is a last name used by the described pedigree and spelled in the main so.
Patriline, along with other words such as paternal, are usually taken to be derived from the words pater for father, and line, such as in a pedigree that goes back.

As of October 2025, a book on the pedigree, ancestry, and history of my family, both sides, paternal and maternal, has been underway at a more intensified level. Includes a 10 page writeup about the Thorntons on my paternal side through LTC Thornton and his father; and about a 10 to 15 page paper about Margaret Johnson/Grayson/Proctor/Tapscott et al (b. about 1839), about 3 copies got printed about 2024. The referent book is well over 250 pages and growing. If interested in obtaining a copy, or making content contributions, helping with the effort, please let me know. Update 3/2026

Genealogy/ethnicity, introductory daub:
My agnatic Thornton line starting with the grandfather, are US Army veterans, per records, at least as far back as serving in WWI and the Civil War. At least one Revolutionary War veteran has been validated as an ancestor (in my paternal, Perciful line). Both my grandfathers (paternal and maternal sides) are US military war veterans.
Civil War veteran Thornton, [great great grandfather] emerging from his family roots in Leesburg, Virginia according to some records, settled down in Raleigh, North Carolina, roughly around the time the war ended. Whereat, relation held with the Winslow/Overton family complex, whom historically, were from the region nearby.
A number of sons and daughters sprung from the marriage. Among the youngest of them, was LTC Dr. James Thornton [my great grandfather], who raised a family mainly in the Manhattan area of New York. My pedigree holds, Dr Thornton had wife surnamed Ten Eyck. Ten Eyck is and was a family well known historically to the Manhattan area. Past generations especially several hundred years ago, are often known for high levels of weight.
In general, of the pool of what may briefly be referred to as my ancestors, within that comes a subset of individuals that immigrated to the region now known as the continental US. Most of these that immigrated during the time span from 1615 to 1870, immigrated from the region currently known and comprised of England, Ireland, and Scotland, in order of most to least. (For example, records show, immigrations or travels, for Perciful, and Starbuck. Surnames in a few generations back in the pedigree, are names like Wells, and Carter.) Many branches of my paternal ancestry generally go back to and through immigrants to the region known today as Virginia, the eras around the 1600s, perhaps some to Maryland, and a few to New Orleans; later generations moved westward, markedly Alabama one of the regions. The Johnston and Johnson surname recurs often in paternal lines.
Maternal ancestry lines have westward movement in the history, arriving on the Eastern Shores of America, and later generations settling in Alabama and Georgia. My maternal grandmother had father or grandfather that is said to have resided in the Caribbean before coming to America; in his day and age, he was known to have Caribbean roots on one side of the family and the other Irish. That was back in the 1800s.
Note: It was custom in centuries past for men, especially who were financially capable, to marry again after a spouse deceased; some ancestors do have multiple marriages in records, and thusly corresponding descendants. [Marriage and offspring through one spouse may not necessarily deny the existence of a marriage and offspring through another spouse.]
