There are various benefits to having SEL lessons taught in schools, such as improved personal and social skills, positive social behavior, and positive academic outcomes. SEL is taught in schools through whole-group (classroom) lessons, small group lessons, and individual counseling sessions (ASCA, 2023).
Upstairs & Downstairs brain is a lesson taught in 4th grade. During this lesson, we learn about what our "Upstairs" brain is and our "Downstairs brain". Upstairs is the part of our brain responsible for decision making, problem solving, and thinking things through. Our Downstairs brain is responsible for keeping us safe. Throughout this unit, students are able to come up with ways to allow their upstairs & downstairs brains to communicate so they can respond appropriately to various situations.
The Zones of Regulation are taught at all levels K-5 at Loyal Elementary School. Students are taught to identify emotions based on the various zone colors, blue, green, yellow, and red. Students then learn the skills that are needed to respond appropriately while they are in each zone. Student learn about what coping skills work best for them.

Students are also given various opportunities to explore new career ideas and clusters. We play games like career hot seat, career Bingo, career Guess Who?, and do career puzzles. Career and job discussions are frequently included in other areas of SEL as well.
