Opens October 1st this year!
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a free form that students can use to apply for federal financial aid for college, career school, or graduate school:
Grants: Federal grants
Work-study: Work-study funds
Loans: Federal loans
Students can also use the FAFSA to determine their eligibility for state and school aid, which many states and colleges also use.
To fill out the FAFSA, students will need to provide personal and financial information, including:
Their parents' Social Security numbers if they are dependent students
Tax returns
Child support records
Cash, savings, and checking account balances
Net worth of investments, businesses, and farms
Students should plan early, meet application deadlines, and ask about grants and scholarships from school counselors and the college financial aid office.
Tips:
Create your FSA ID at least 3 days before completing the FAFSA form
College Goal Wisconsin is an organization that provides free FAFSA completion workshops to communities all across Wisconsin. They have in-person workshops as well as virtual.
Once students and parents have completed the FAFSA, if they have any questions about financial aid in general or about a specific aid type, we highly recommend that they reach out to the Financial Aid Office at the institution they will be attending. The Financial Aid Office is an important resource for students, so getting them in contact and familiar with their specific office will be beneficial.
