We’re all familiar with the term “Teen Angst” but what about “Teacher Angst”? A new alternative rock band, Teacherz, uses wry observations and biting satire to bring us into the world of teacher angst on their debut CD, Alternative Lesson Plan.
Decaying urban school systems are their playground, something they share with America’s youth. Like America’s youth, they rage against, corruption, interruptions, and hypocrisy. Pounding, anthemic rhythms, and profound lyrics are their weapons.
Teacherz band members are four veteran high school teachers working in an urban school district in a major U.S. city. Mr. Mello is on guitar, Mr. Nags, on bass, Mr. Really Hard, drums, and Mr. Prophet, vocals. Mr. Prophet is the frontman and writes the words and melodies of the songs. The other band members write the instrumental music.
All of the songs on the CD are written in the same way, Mello, Nags, and Reallyhard jam and Mr. Prophet drops in lyrical vocal riffs or melodic ideas. Mr. Prophet writes some of the lyrics and /or melodies ahead of time, others on the spot. This patchwork approach is then refined in subsequent rehearsals.
Songs on Alternative Lesson Plan range from the anthemic “Welcome To Our Institution”, which compares a school to a mental institution, to the whimsical chords played behind the poignant “High School” a song about drug abuse. The haunting “Terrorist” and “Sonny Brought A Gun To School” add a dose of reality to the mix. The biting satire of “Hypocrite Stomp”, “I’m Taking Roll”, “They’re Laughing Behind Your Back”, “Cafeteria Food” and “NCLB” add twists and turns to the journey into the world of teacher angst.
The wry observations of “I Don’t Have Time” “Microcosm” and “Grades Are Due” continue the teacher/student theme while “Bi-Polar Nation” talks about the political divisiveness in America today and the Thrashy anthem “I Don’t Want To Fight In Your Stinking War” captures the angst of teens worried about being drafted. Whether you’re looking for songs that smack of haunting reality or biting satire, metal-tinged or Thrashy anthems, or just want to listen to songs that mean something, Alternative Lesson Plan has got you covered.
Some CDs make a statement; others take you on a journey. Alternative Lesson Plan does both. Teacherz offer a unique voice and
perspective. Just like the teachers in all of our lives, you can accept them or reject them, but you will never forget them.
About The Lyrics…
“Welcome to Our Institution” was written because I noticed that many institutions have a lot in common. Schools, mental institutions, hospitals, and prisons all share overcrowding, bloated beaurocracy, lack of care for clients, institutional food, etc. I wrote this song as an introduction to schools but knew perfectly well that it could be an introduction to any institution. I could see it being an opening theme to a movie that takes place in a school, a prison, a hospital, or a mental institution.
“Sonny Brought A Gun To School” was written to symbolize the rampant violence in our schools today. It’s about a kid that is constantly being bullied. He’s got no one he can reach out to so he brings a gun to school to solve the problem himself. I’ve observed that in the aftermath of school violence, there is often adverse publicity, lawsuits, and a toughening of the rules but the problem isn’t solved. This is played out in the lyric’s third verse as Sonny’s little brother is still being picked on and he also has access to a gun. It’s only a matter of time, given the way things were handled, before Sonny’s fate befalls his brother.
“I Don’t Have Time” was written to show some of the pressures teachers commonly labor under while providing a glimpse into the decay of school systems as a backdrop. Pressures created by constant interruptions, overcrowding, lack of materials, and too little time to
do the job are eating away at the ability of teachers to teach.
