Ever since I was 22 years old, I have been fascinated in becoming a Children's Librarian because of the love of educating children and being around the literature. After graduating from the University of North Carolina Wilmington with my undergraduate degree in English and minor in History, I know I was interested in pursuing my graduate education in Library and Information Science to become a Children's Librarian. I was really excited to start my Master's Library and Science Program at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. The first professor I met was Dr. Nora Bird who told me about the MLIS program the learning outcomes. In April 2021, I was excited to be accepted into the University of North Carolina Greensboro Master's In Library And Information Science Program. Throughout my MLIS Program, I have met some wonderful professors who have encouraged me to work hard and to fix mistakes on assignments to be successful. UNC Greensboro is the university I felt most welcomed and comforted by my professors in which I can ask specific library related questions. I have taken wonderful children related courses to help me prepare to work in child related services. My Top Five Courses Include: Materials For Children, Materials For Adolescents, Library Services For Young People, Reading, Literacy and the Library, and Storytelling. Being in the MLIS Program at the University of North Carolina Greensboro I learned that everyone is a family and stick together. No one is left out and we can all be honest with each other about certain opinions. My Goal For the Next Five Years Between 2023-2027 is to become a Children, Teen, or Adult Librarian and work my way up to higher institutions such as the Library of Congress.
Field Experience/Project Proposal
During My Spring 2023 Semester, I am doing my Field Experience at North County Regional Library located in Huntersville, North Carolina. My first week at the library I was introduced to the Children's Manager Susan Lyons who was very welcoming to have me. Throughout my first week I was given the tour of the North County Library while being introduced to wonderful staff members. The staff members at the library feel like they are family and being welcomed to their work environment to make me feel part of the team. I got an a great observation of how to do Baby and Family Storytime as well as meeting wonderful parents and their children. My second week I learned to pull holding books from the library shelves while checking them into the system and figuring out which branch the materials will be transferred. My Practicum Project Proposal will be mixed with a couple of ideas. I would like to learn to bring more younger mothers between the ages of 15-24 to the library with their children to encourage them and their children to start early literacy. I want to learn more about creating Autism Related Youth Programs especially for the month of April to help introduce different topics to help children and teens learn more about the Autism Spectrum.
