Hello Everyone, my name is Bria Harris. I was born in Detroit, Michigan and was raised in Charlotte, North Carolina. I am 30 years Old and I am currently in my last semester at the University of North Carolina Greensboro Library and Information Science Program. My major is studying to become a Children's Librarian. I have been studying in higher education throughout my entire twenties. Based on my education background, I graduated from Central Piedmont Community College in May 2016 with my Associate In Arts Degree. I attend the University of North Carolina Wilmington from Fall 2017-Spring 2020. I graduate with my Bachelor In Arts Degree in English with a Minor in History in May 2020 (Covid Year). During my first semester of graduate school, I was excited that I won the David H Clift Scholarship from the American Library Association based on writing why I wanted to become a librarian. I am very excited to be graduating with my Master's In Education of Library and Information Science this upcoming May 2023. Throughout the past couple of years at UNC Greensboro, I have grown to learn about fascinating topics about studying to become a librarian. I have learned how to create LibGuides and Infographics as well as learning about working in the services of Children and Teens. My Top Five Favorite Courses throughout the Program were: Materials For Children, Materials For Adolescents, Storytelling, Library Services For Young People, Reading, Literacy, and the Library. The professors at UNC Greensboro were very open and welcoming to me in the program. They have supported me and gave me excellent feedback on assignments based on what I needed to work or edit. Attending UNC Greensboro has been one of my favorite institutions I got a great education.
Besides being a Children's Librarian, I would like to become an author of poetry and horror. My side hobbies include reading, writing in my five year journal, going to the movies, spending time with my father, seeing friends on occasions, and traveling. I have five year goals between the years 2023-2027 (Age 30-34 Years Old) I made on Canvas to strive myself to success. One of my main goals for 2023 is to get a job as a Children, Teens, or Adult Librarian in city metros such as Washington D.C., Boston, Massachusetts, New York City, Connecticut, and Delaware. I am doing a field experience this semester at North County Public Library in Huntersville, NC to learn about the job of being a Children's Librarian. I have met some wonderful people in MLIS program and my at North County Public Library. My practicum supervisor Susan Lyons has been wonderful and engaging towards me based on the progress I have done in the Children's Department. I am very excited that I will lead a Storytime session towards the end of March to gain experience. I am very excited for my life goals these next five years and I am very blessed of where God took me of where I need to be today. I will love my job as a Children's Librarian, I cannot wait to put smiling faces towards children and parents and help a child get further in their education to help them grow into their full potential. I have grown so much over the last five years, I am not the same individual as I was when I was 20 or 25 years old; I am a indulgent adult who has a passion to make the education system better.
