A major or area of specialization is simply a specific subject that students can specialize in while aspiring to a college degree. Typically, between a third and half of the courses you take in college are in your major or related to it. In some majors, you prepare for a specific career.

It is also defined as the more specific area of study you focused on while completing your degree. If you study for a degree, your main subject is your major.

An academic major is the academic discipline to which an undergraduate student formally commits.
