Frida (German Shepherd)- Honorary Member of the Xolo clan
Frida has been with me the longest and is, in many ways, the emotional anchor of the entire pack. She is a German Shepherd who has experienced fear-based reactivity, physical strain from past injury, and the ongoing challenge of navigating a household that has changed dramatically over time. Frida is deeply loyal and intelligent, but her nervous system carries the imprint of earlier stress and instability. She feels responsible for maintaining order, and when that responsibility becomes too heavy, she communicates through corrections and heightened vigilance.
This year, Frida has had to adapt to the arrival of multiple Xolos, each with very different needs and energy levels. The stress of repeated transitions has been real for her. Her reactivity is not rooted in aggression, but in overwhelm and protectiveness, especially when other dogs are dysregulated. Supporting Frida has required honoring her limits, advocating for her space, and ensuring that her physical and emotional needs are not overshadowed by the demands of the new rescues.
Frida’s journey highlights an often-overlooked reality in rescue work: resident dogs are also impacted by intake decisions. Part of ethical rescue is recognizing when a dog is carrying too much and adjusting accordingly. Ongoing work with Frida focuses on reducing pressure, reinforcing calm routines, and ensuring her therapy needs are met due to her double knee surgery in 2024. Moving forward, additional training support and structured decompression time will be essential for her long-term well-being.
