Trigger point injections are simple injections to relieve myofascial pain. It is used to relieve irritable, painful or taut bands of muscle or palapable knots, which cause localised or referred pain.
If it is successful, it can be repeated or can be done with botox (botulinium toxin) or pulsed radiofrequency to prolong the benefits.
This procedure is done in day case or out-patient settings. You can eat or drink as usual before the procedure. Take all your medications as usual. You should be prepared to stay in hospital till lunch time or later occasionally. You need to arrange someone to collect after the procedure. The procedure only takes 5 to 15 minutes to perform.
Side-effects: Bruising at the site of injection, Flare-up of pain (getting worse), infection (rare), steroid side-effects if used (facial puffiness, worsening of diabetes).
